In 1968, while political unrest rocked the world from Prague to Mexico City, Richard Lester released a film about a frivolous affair between a San Francisco doctor in the midst of a divorce and a wealthy socialite suffering from domestic abuse at the hands of her handsome naval architect husband. The promotion of the film was stunted by the political events of the time, and it failed to appeal to audiences. It ended as a commercial, and to some extent critical, failure. The thrust of Shinomon Taj's full-length accompaniment to the film is perhaps most succinctly articulated by the the words of critic Roger Ebert from his 1968 review: "Richard Lester's Petulia made me desperately unhappy, and yet I am unable to find a single thing wrong with it."
